Super Rugby Semi Final: Hurricanes v Chiefs

Saturday 30 July 2016

Attendance:  24623

Score

Hurricanes: 25
Chiefs: 9

Review

The Chiefs dominated possession and territory and thoroughly tested the Hurricanes' defensive commitment to each other.

Time after time, though, a Hurricane came up with an important tackle or got their hand in to disrupt a pass or simply got up and put themselves in the defensive line, even if they didn't think they had the strength.

Around that, Barrett sprinkled a bit of his magic, creating Halaholo's try from nothing, then intercepting a Sam Cane pass to ensure the Hurricanes led 15-6 at halftime. Vito powered over from a five-metre scrum shortly after the break and then it was all about heart and defence.

The Hurricanes win over the Chiefs 25-9 means Wellington will host a second consecutive Super Rugby final - with a new opponent in the season's showdown next Saturday night (6 August).

The Wellington-based franchise will take on the Lions from South Africa as the hosts seek to claim the title for the first time in franchise history.

Hurricanes 25 (Willis Halaholo, Beauden Barrett, Victor Vito tries; Barrett 2 pen, 2 con) Chiefs 9 (Damian McKenzie 3 pen). HT: 15-6

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

We understand how important cowbells are to fans of the Chiefs, but a decision has been made that they will not be permitted for Saturday's match. However the venue and the Hurricanes value the atmosphere that is added to the game day experience by our visiting fans. So, although there won’t be any cowbells, staff will be handing out both Hurricanes and Chiefs flags to fans on Saturday.
