Mitre 10 Cup Championship Final

Friday 27 October 2017

Attendance:  7908

Score

Wellington Lions: 59
Bay of Plenty: 45

Review

Wellington have claimed their first final victory since 2000 with a scarcely believable 59-45 extra-time victory over Bay of Plenty in the Championship final at Westpac Stadium.

Nothing could separate the sides after a thrilling 80 minutes with the scores locked up 40-40. But Wellington were too good in extra time with a rampaging Julian Savea try securing the win and their place back in the Premiership for the first time since 2014.

Scorers: Wellington 59 (Thomas Umaga-Jensen, Sam Lousi, Tolu Fahamokioa 2, Brad Shields, Wes Goosen, Sitiveni Paongo, Julian Savea tries, Jackson Garden-Bachop 2 pen, 4 con) Bay of Plenty 45 (Luke Campbell, Joe Webber 2, Tyler Ardron, Jesse Parete, Terrence Hepetema, Mitchell Karpik tries, Mike Delany 4 con)

HT: 20-14

Event Information

Wellington Lions v Bay of Plenty

The Wellington Lions are one step away from reaching our collective goal of gaining promotion to the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership.

All our supporters have played a massive role in helping the team get to this point - But the job is not done. It has been three long seasons since the Lions were last in the Premiership and since then we have learned the hard way that there are no easy paths to promotion.

In 2015 we lost by a single point to Hawke's Bay in the Championship final (26-25) in Napier, and last year, despite home advantage, were tipped up 40-37 by eventual champions North Harbour.

So now our union find ourselves on the cusp again!

Your support during at last week's semi-final win over Northland made a huge impact on our players, coaches, management and staff and we'd love to do it all again on Friday night for the final - hopefully with the same result.

Kids go Free (including high school students - please bring a form of ID) and do not require a ticket - just turn up and you will get scanned through the gates.

As you have done all season come down and cheer on the boys in what will be an exciting game of Finals football.

Together lets "Restore the Pride!"

Go the LIONS!
