ITM Cup: Wellington Lions v Otago

Thursday 17 September 2015

Attendance:  1655

Score

Wellington Lions: 36
Otago: 37

Review

Otago’s defensive resolve helped pave the way for a thrilling 37-36 win over Wellington at Westpac Stadium on Thursday night.

Wellington’s attacking spark was ignited midway through the first half through Vaea Fifita’s fifth try of the season, but Otago remained composed and kicked their way to a 23-18 lead after the first half.

Wellington roared into life in the second half and when Ardie Savea scored a deserved try in the 72nd minute, Wellington looked to have claimed a comfortable win.

However, two Otago tries in five minutes and Breen’s third and fourth conversions put paid to that.

The win sees Otago return to the top four of the Championship ladder with 12 points, one point behind Bay of Plenty in third. In contrast to that, Wellington picked up two competition points to return to the top of the Championship despite back-to-back losses.

Event Information

It’s all about redemption for the 2015 Wellington Lions as they look to take hold of their Championship status and earn the right to return to the top-flight Premiership in 2016.

Under the guidance of a new coach, and with many players rolling on from a fantastic Super Rugby season, the team is motivated, hungry and eager to put on a good show this year.

With five games being hosted here in Wellington, this is your chance to get behind the Lions during what is perhaps the season where they most need your support. A lot of hard work has gone into preparing to face the challenges of this season head on, and we’d love to have you there with us as we look to unleash our fury on some of those provinces who got the best of us in 2014.
