The vibrant celebration of Eid Al-Adha at Sky Stadium on Tuesday 18 June was a testament to Wellington's diversity and inclusivity.

Organised by NZEIDDAY Trust, the event brought together a diverse mix of Muslims and non-Muslims, young and old, in a joyous display of community and interfaith harmony. The event marked the Hajj (pilgrimage) season and symbolised solidarity with Muslims around the world.

For the third consecutive year, the event showcased the strong community spirit in the capital. NZEIDDAY Trust, known for its rich history of organising Eid events in Auckland, orchestrated this memorable day.

The celebration featured morning prayers, captivating cultural performances, a delightful array of traditional food stalls, and engaging games for children of all ages, fostering a strong sense of unity and belonging.

Event Manager Fathima Iftikar expressed heartfelt thanks to all attendees and supporters, emphasising the importance of such gatherings in promoting understanding and unity within New Zealand's multicultural society. "By coming together in celebration, we not only enrich our own cultural celebration but also contribute to the broader social fabric of New Zealand," she noted.

Notable dignitaries in attendance included MP Dr Carlos Cheung; HE Dr George Azer, Egyptian Ambassador; HE Dr Faisal Aziz Ahmed, Pakistani High Commissioner;; Mayor Anita Baker of Porirua City Council; Deputy Mayor Laurie Foon of Wellington City Council; and Councillors Nureddin Abdurahman, Iona Pannett, Tony Randle, Diane Calvert, Ray Chung, Tim Brown, Sarah Free, Ben McNulty, Nīkau Wi Neera and the Pōneke councillors from Greater Wellington Regional Council – Yadana Saw and Thomas Nash..

The event's success was bolstered by the generous support of sponsors, including the Ministry for Ethnic Communities, the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ), Wellington City Council, Al-Ameen Islamic Development, and the Lower Hutt Islamic Centre. Their contributions were crucial and integral in ensuring a safe, inclusive, and joyous celebration for all attendees.

Sky Stadium, the event host, demonstrated not just tremendous cooperation and flexibility, but a true partnership, accommodating the requirements for such a large gathering. Their promotion of the event on their promotional channels and social media was greatly appreciated by the organisers.

Photos from the event captured the vibrant atmosphere, showcasing cultural performances, community interactions, and the delightful array of traditional foods. The smiles and laughter of participants, both young and old, highlighted the essence of Eid Al-Adha – a time of reflection, gratitude, and togetherness.
